What is SkinPen microneedling?

SkinPen is the only FDA-approved microneedling device available, delivering a safe, minimally-invasive skin rejuvenation treatment. By creating controlled micro-injuries in the dermis, it activates your skin’s natural healing cascade—boosting collagen and elastin for firmer, more luminous skin. As we age the natural architecture of our skin deteriorates. This deterioration leads to fine lines, wrinkles, large pores and uneven skin texture. Microneedling stimulates the skin’s natural ability to repair itself.

How does microneedling work?

Microneedling works by creating thousands of controlled micro-injuries in the skin to trigger the body’s natural wound-healing process. This process results in the formation and remodelling of collagen and elastin. This leads to a gradual restoration of skin architecture, resulting in more youthful skin that appears smoother and tighter. Results for microneedling start to become visible after the first treatment and build up slowly with maximum results following three to six treatments.

Why choose Optimise Aesthetics for your microneedling treatment?

My goal with microneedling is to achieve a refreshed, rejuvenated, natural-looking result with minimal or no discomfort. I have extensive aesthetic and microsurgical experience with a very light touch. This is essential to minimise discomfort during treatment and allows me to fine tune my treatments to the patient’s desired outcomes. I am a qualified GP and aesthetic doctor (Level 7 Diploma Aesthetics). I have undergone extensive cosmetic dermatology and aesthetic training at Harley Academy. I specialise in treatments such as anti-wrinkle injections, profhilo, dermal fillers and polynucleotides.

In addition, as a GP my holistic approach to my cosmetic work allows me to explore your medical history and any concerns you may have or have previously had with regards to past treatments elsewhere. My patients often describe me as calm and reassuring. I will always discuss budget prior to treatment and will be open and honest about how to achieve the best results according to your budget too.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is microneedling good for?

Microneedling improves skin texture, smooths fine lines, shrinks pores, reduces acne scars and stretch marks, balances pigmentation, and even promotes collagen-driven hair growth.

What are the downsides of microneedling?

Common downsides include temporary redness, swelling or bruising, slight discomfort, infection risk without proper sterilisation, and potential hyperpigmentation in darker skin.

How long will microneedling results last?

Professional microneedling typically delivers visible improvements for 3–6 months. Collagen remodelling peaks at 4–6 weeks, and maintenance sessions every 4–6 months can extend benefits up to a year.

How often should you microneedle?

Microneedling is best spaced every 4–6 weeks to allow full healing and collagen turnover.

Does microneedling tighten skin?

Yes. By creating controlled micro-injuries, microneedling kick-starts collagen and elastin production, leading to firmer, tighter skin and a noticeable reduction in mild sagging and fine lines.

Can you wear makeup after microneedling?

Wait at least 48 hours before applying makeup to avoid clogging open micro-channels. After 2–3 days, switch to non-comedogenic, mineral-based products to protect healing skin.

Should I get a chemical peel or microneedling?

Choose a chemical peel for rapid surface exfoliation and brightening—ideal for pigmentation or an immediate glow. Opt for microneedling when you want deeper collagen remodelling to tackle scars, texture and early wrinkles.

Will microneedling get rid of deep wrinkles?

Microneedling smooths moderate lines via collagen induction, but deep wrinkles often only soften modestly. For pronounced folds, combine microneedling with fillers for stronger lifting effects.

Which is better, fillers or microneedling?

Fillers instantly restore volume and contour, while microneedling gradually enhances skin quality and firmness through collagen stimulation. The right choice depends on whether you need an immediate lift (fillers) or long-term skin health (microneedling).

What is the best age for microneedling?

Starting microneedling in your late 20s to early 30s helps proactively boost collagen and prevent early aging. It remains effective into your 50s and beyond, with treatment depth tailored to mature skin’s needs.
